On Saturday, January 31st, the inaugural class of the Galesburg-Augusta Athletic Hall of Fame was inducted at a luncheon ceremony at the High School. Inducted were 8 individuals and 2 teams. This inaugural class is a great slice of G-A history with 3 Hall of Fame coaches and three of the better athletes to come through Galesburg-Augusta. The luncheon gave people the opportunity to catch up, some not seeing others for almost 30 years, and gave others time to reminisce share stories from the days at G-A. The luncheon plans to be an annual event, hoping to draw crowds that want to get together and see friends and classmates. The luncheon serves not only the opportunity to introduce our new class, but it will also give a chance to recognize previous classes and will serve as a fundraiser for our sports booster program. If you are interested in attending, or making a donation toward the Hall of Fame, contact Jeff McCubbin at jamccubbin@aol.com. |

Alex “Fuzz” Forrester |
|
| Mr. Forrester joins the Hall of Fame class of 2009 as a coach. Alex began his teaching career at Galesburg-Augusta in 1962 as a member of the Middle School Staff. In 1970, Alex moved to the High School to teach a variety of subjects. In 1967, Alex began coaching. In the next 23 years, Alex would coach basketball, football, track and golf for Galesburg-Augusta. He spent all 23 years as an assistant to Bill Maskill, developing one of the better football programs in the state. Of all of his football coaching, a couple of his fondest memories were coaching in the Silverdome in 1990’s State Championship game and the annual game at Fort Custer where the game was televised for the hospital wards. For 8 years he was the head basketball coach. For four years he served as the head golf coach. And for 1 year he was the head track coach. Besides coaching, Alex spent 11 years as G-A’s Athletic Director, not knowing this would be the beginning of being a great supporter of the schools and a “do all” contributor to the district. What the district would ask of Alex, usually took him away from his dearest wife Sue and his three sons, Mike, Scott and Eric. Even after retiring, Galesburg-Augusta did not stop asking Alex to contribute. Alex would often find himself substitute teaching, or being the call in Principal sub. When it came time to build a new high school, there were Alex and Sue participating as part of the design team for both the new high school and the remodeling of the old high school to the new Primary. For his contributions to the district, Alex was honored as the first honoree of the Legend’s basketball tournament played between four schools over Christmas Break. Unfortunately, we lost Alex on March 6, 2006. However, if you looked at Alex’s contributions to Galesburg-Augusta, the time he spent with numerous athletes, students and teachers, you will find little pieces of Alex in all of the graduates and staff. His influence and infectious attitude have guided many people toward achieving their goals and dreams. |

Joyce and Wayne Terberg |
|
It is most gratifying to have the category of Special Contributor included in the list of those individuals who are to become a part of the Galesburg-Augusta Athletic Hall of Fame. There are so many people, behind the scenes, who make it possible for quality school programs, like athletics, to exist. When possible, to recognize them in a special way is most important. The husband and wife team of Joyce and Wayne TerBerg are two of those dedicated people. For over twenty-five years the two of them worked their magic to improve the athletic situation for the student athletes in the communities of Galesburg and Augusta. Wayne was a tremendous asset to helping Joyce bring order to the indispensable need for a profitable and yet service oriented concession stand. For years Joyce ordered supplies, found parent workers for the concession stand and resolved the untold number of problems associated with that business. She and Wayne did this with the understanding that they were to only deposit the money in the bank at the end of the day and they were to receive no monetary compensation for their efforts. Their efforts included having a “top notch” concession area at football, Basketball, and Wrestling games and matches. Wayne, along with his “staff” of Walt Lemmien, Buck Eldridge, Ted Mazur, Carroll Lindsay, Ed Gladysz and Bob Dunithan, made sure that the construction of the NEW athletic facility in Galesburg and Augusta was FIRST CLASS! Literally, much of the planning and physical labor was performed by these men as well asmany, many others with much of that labor being directed by Wayne. That athletic facility was completed in 1971. When General Motors was being built there was an observation box on the GM site. When that box was no longer needed by GM, Ted Mazur asked if G-A could have it for a Press Box for our football field. GM was most happy to have that “Box” recycled to G-A and it is still in use today. That press box was moved from the old field across Battle Creek St. to its present location as part of the new field project. Wayne personally roped up the cast iron fire escape to the end of the press box, to serve as a stairway to the inside, and attached it himself I know because I saw him do it! Attaching the football field drainage system to the storm sewer that came from Battle Creek St. was done by Wayne by him wielding a sledge hammer to force a hole to accommodate the two drainage pipes fitting together. I know because I was there! I also was present when both football held goal posts arrived at the “new” field. Wayne had connections at Fort Custer, which was being tom down at the time. Some of the scrap was large steam pipes which Wayne arranged

Bill “Coach”Maskill |
|
Bill Maskill came to Galesburg-Augusta in 1957 after earning 3 varsity letters in football and track at Michigan State University. Bill began his teaching career as the Physical Education teacher, developing legendary P.E. classes that are still talked about today in the community. Trying to define Bill’s coaching career is best summed up by asking which sport didn’t Coach coach. Bill is most noted for his accomplishments on the gridiron, but also took time to coach baseball, basketball, and track. However, it is the accomplishments on the gridiron that has brought Bill to the coaching forefront.

Jim VanZandt |
|
If Jim VanZandt’s high school tennis resume wasn’t good enough, Class C-D singles runner up in 1955; or his college tennis resume, playing at powerhouse Kalamazoo College (at the time 69 consecutive league championships) where he received most improved player in 1959, then his accomplishments as a tennis coach demonstrates that Jim VanZandt understood the game of tennis.

Al Cox |
|
When you talk about Galesburg-Augusta Wrestling, there is one man who can say he started it, Coach Al Cox. Coach Cox came to Galesburg-Augusta in 1961 as a Physical Education Teacher, who also taught the occasional social studies, health, and science classes, but it was his Middle School Physical Education classes that were most often talked about, being modeled after Coach Maskill’s high school Physical Education Classes.
Al now lives with his wife, Helen and has one child Jason. Al also had 5 children from his first marriage, Barb, Frank, Delores, Cheryl and Betty. Al is most proud that his sons took up the art of coaching wrestling, Jason at Gull Lake and G-A and Frank at John Glen High School. Also, his grandsons, Josh Henschel and Jake Osterling have also taken up the coaching jobs in wrestling at G-A. |

George Waldorf |
|
When asked how good a running back is at Galesburg-Augusta, comparisons to George “Pudge” Waldorf are usually at the top. In 1958, George ran for 1275 yards in 8 games, which still stands as the 3rd highest season total in G-A history. His 10.6 yards per carry is still third best for a single season and his 8.4 yards per carry is third best for career. His 159 yards per game and 128 yards a game average in career is #1 in the G-A record book. But when you ask others, George’s leadership was just as good as his abilities on the gridiron. George was strong with his teammates and his work ethic and drive were examples that did not need words. Among George’s accomplishments were the following:
George now lives in Delton. George has two children, Terry and Brenda. After school, George worked in the wholesale bakery business and then drove gravel truck for 20 years. |

Linda Noud |
|
Galesburg-Augusta has seen a lot of female talent go through the high school over the years, but Linda Noud may rank as the best female athlete to ever wear the Maroon and Gold. A 1979 graduate, Linda’s all around athletic ability earned her 18 varsity letters in her four years of high school. Receiving 4 in Track, Basketball, Tennis and Softball and 2 in volleyball, Linda demonstrated an ability to succeed at most everything she tried. As you read her accomplishments, they will speak for themselves.
Linda went on to Kalamazoo Valley Community College to play basketball and was on the first ever KVCC tennis team. In her second year at KVCC, Linda won the prestigious Dale B. Lake Scholar Athlete Award, which rewards the best male/female athlete who exemplifies the responsibility and achievement of the scholar/athlete. After KVCC, Linda attended Western Michigan University and the College of Charleston. |
